Charlie's Plan for Saving Half a Billion Dollars

Your donation will support Charlie’s work towards a city plan that will save us half a billion dollars. Future growth will provide the jobs and tax base to sustain the quality of life for our community, but we need to plan the growth well.

We will save at least half a billion dollars if we make the right decisions about growth. This will be achieved in two ways: first, a better balance between outward growth (new developments in new neighbourhoods) with infill development in existing neighbourhoods; second, building a transportation system that makes better use of our roads.

The money saved can be used to re-invest in all of our neighbourhoods and facilities without asking for more and more tax dollars, as we have done in the past. Saskatoon has spread itself too thin for too long, and this is why your taxes have been going up while our roads, sidewalks, pipes, and parks decline.

Saving half a billion dollars is real. Just this past April, the City received a report that stated a 'business as usual’ approach to future city planning will cost at least half a billion dollars more in transportation infrastructure alone, let alone all of the extra civic services (i.e. fire stations) required to accommodate growing sprawl. Changing how we grow means putting more people into areas that already have these services and infrastructure. This creates a double win: the city avoids having to build costly new infrastructure, while the more intensive use of the land generates higher tax revenues.

Here’s an example of how it would work. Once a new subdivision reaches a certain size, it needs a new $40 to $60 million overpass to accommodate the traffic. With existing growth patterns we will need two or three of these in the next few years. If we could reroute half the growth to the substantial amount of vacant land in existing neighbourhoods, we could build one less overpass.  That’s a huge saving that could make a big difference. For $20 million – less than half the cost of one new overpass – we could fix all of the multi-use pathways, playgrounds, and irrigation systems for our parks in the entire city.

If you agree it’s time to save half a billion dollars and re-invest in all neighbourhoods, please help me by making a contribution. I promise to use the money to share this message with as many people as possible so that, together, we can change the future of Saskatoon.

I am Charlie Clark and I am ready to be your next Mayor! Together we will develop a model prairie city for the 21st century by getting the basics right, creating safe and inclusive neighbourhoods, and fostering growth and prosperity for all.

All of us want the same thing – to live in a thriving city that makes us proud.

We could be a model prairie city for the 21st century. We have the talent, we have the ideas, we have the institutions and organizations to make this happen. And we have an obligation to dream big. To do any less is a disservice to the opportunities before us, and to our city’s children and their future.

Saskatoon has outstanding thinkers and doers. We need to engage them in taking Saskatoon to a new level of economic, social, cultural, and environmental achievement. We have the opportunity to learn from the mistakes of other cities that developed earlier.

If we do this right, we can have properly maintained roads and playgrounds in every neighbourhood, a diversified local economy with good jobs, well-designed growth in the core and the suburbs, and opportunities for people of all walks of life to reach their potential.

I want this to be a great city for all our city’s children to grow up in - for my own three children as well as the children from Kerrobert and Sweetgrass and Aleppo who have come here to build their dreams.

If you agree that it’s time for Saskatoon to be a model prairie city for the 21st century, please help me by making a contribution. I promise to use the money to share this message with as many people as possible so that, together, we can change the future of Saskatoon.
